Success Story: The Power of Storytelling

Outside, it was a cold, rainy, February night, but inside Perro Negro, you could feel warmth, collegiality, and camaraderie.

Many of the 19 physicians who joined our inaugural Story Rounds event (based on Stanford Medical’s Live Storytelling Series for doctors) shared heartfelt and truly personal stories in an atmosphere of trust, safety, and support.

Yes, there were tears.  And some stories elicited a lot of laughter.  What was especially poignant, though, was how the simple but essential tradition of storytelling brought down barriers between organizations, specialties, and individuals, allowing those in the room to come together as members of a single community.

Thanks to the South Island Medical Staff Association, the South Island Division of Family Practice, the Saanich Peninsula Physician Society, the Victoria Division of Family Practice for their financial and administrative support for this event.
