GoldStar Awards – Sept 2024

How lucky we are to work with such incredible colleagues!

UBC Co-op student Izzy Morrisey received a thoughtful nomination from Dr. Paul Winston:

“This UVic student is a powerhouse of compassion and consent. Her way with children and adults is extraordinary. She guides people through fear and concern during medical procedures. She has reorganized and rearranged endless areas of our unfunded clinic and constantly looks for new ways to make the staff and patients feel safe, secure and have a better experience.

For an undergrad, her compassion is endless and she has gone out of her way to look after team members when they were sick. Our clinic is grossly underfunded and she constantly helps the administrative staff to lessen their burden. On top of her school work and job with our team, she is volunteering for numerous areas in Island Health and the community.”

Dr. Dayna Briemon has been recognized by Dr. Fred Voon:

“Dr. Briemon repeatedly takes on an exceptional workload to avoid the ER going without enough physicians. She’s worked extra half shifts immediately following a regular shift, as well as later in the evening on the same day as a regular morning shift. This is certainly outside the norm, and difficult to do in the face of increasing patient complexity and wait times.

She also does this without complaint or fanfare, persevering with a quiet strength that is admirable, and when other EDs are forced to close or leave shifts uncovered. When some of our group has been struck down by illness, disease or burnout, Dr Briemon has stepped into the void.”

Emilia Nevin, ER CNL also received a nomination from Dr. Voon:

“Emilia was a wizard at expediting patients in a busy department tonight and navigated conflict and specific system challenges with the highest professionalism. Her strong advocacy for the numerous patients in our beds, halls, and waiting rooms is impressive in the face of impossible situations.

Dr. Michael Schachter received a nomination from Dr. Alex Hoechsmann:

“Dr. Schachter came in to the ER to see a patient with a significant renal problem.  He provided excellent service.”

Dr. Marie-Noelle Trottier-Boucher has been recognized by Dr. Jennifer Balfour:

“Since the moment Dr Trottier-Boucher arrived as an early career pediatrician here, she has been an impactful, buoyant colleague, great to work with, and making change that matters everywhere.

Dr. Trottier-Boucher has created meaningful and challenging projects come to fruition by leading a change in Asthma Care on our pediatric ward, in ER and even spreading up island. She has engaged a wide team to be a big part of our Eat Sleep Console care pathway, changing the way infants of substance using mothers are looked after, in a way even bigger centres across the country haven’t caught up to yet. She has completed the Physician Quality improvement program, is leading a project on the leadership structure for general pediatrics, has been an active member of the Care Network, and is exploring new projects to support Physician sustainable practice and wellness. Dr Trottier-Boucher is an upbeat colleague who always asks her colleagues how they are, knows her colleagues as humans first, looks to connect, and shows great respect to all team members. She is a listener and life long learner.  She asks questions, hears what others have to say, and brings a curious mindset to every day work, always ready to know more, and always ready to say “how can I help?” Unfailingly, when call need to be covered, Dr Trottier-Boucher will look to see if she can make a shift in her own busy life to help out the group. I know when I see Dr Trottier-Boucher in my workspace, I am going to have a good day, and I am going to feel refreshed and lifted up just from the interaction. She makes space and time for others and leads with generosity, skill and competence.”

Sincere thanks to those who provided the nominations, and to those GoldStar award winners for making our workplace a better place to be!
