Trauma cases are tricky things. Being Most Responsible Physicians (MRP) for these patients can be challenging, too. Thanks to a South Island FEI grant, the Hospitalist team brought in the local experts to increase their comfort level in providing excellent care to these patients.
Dr. Vivian Ming led the work, organizing three upskilling sessions for Hospitalists:
- Dr. James Stone, Orthopedic Surgeon – Pelvic Fractures
- Dr. John Samphire, Thoracic Surgeon – Rib Fractures
- Dr. Alexandra Mihailovic, General Surgeon – General Trauma Management
The sessions were all well attended by Hospitalists and two were even recorded for future reference.
In addition to the learning sessions, Trauma Leaders, the Surgical Department Head, and Hospitalists met to discuss the future organization of a trauma unit, the creation of a Trauma Step Down Unit, and the implications on MRP status.
This project is the full package: Physician engagement and upskilling, as well as planning for better teamwork and patient care.
